Information security and information warfare in the context of media
Introduction and Context
The modern media landscape is currently characterized by the rapid development of digital technologies, which over the past decade have radically changed the mechanisms of information dissemination, control, and security, scaling and giving rise to new forms of information warfare. The convergence of traditional and digital media is one of the main reasons for the scaling and replacement of the nature of existing cyber threats. Those arising from the complexity of cyberattacks and the weaponization of information flows, which actualize the need for information security analysis in the context of the development of modern media. The intersection of media development and information warfare is particularly evident in the spread of disinformation campaigns, the use of algorithmic systems for targeted influence operations, and the emergence of hybrid threats that combine cyberattacks with narrative manipulation. These processes challenge national security and the sustainability of democracy and, in addition, require a critical reassessment of the regulatory framework, international norms, and technological safeguards (Ugbede et al., 2024). In the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war, media has been a key battleground. Given the growing trend of increasing the number of deepfakes and fake news stories to spread disinformation and undermine Ukraine's national security, the Ukrainian government and society have implemented numerous preventive measures, including the promotion of media literacy and fact-checking. In addition to promoting media literacy to identify manipulative tactics (Plazova et al., 2024), Terp & Breuer (2022) note the effectiveness of using new technologies, in particular tools such as the DISARM platform, to detect and neutralize disinformation. In addition, Cheishvili & Kostava (2024) emphasize the need to develop an international system of partnerships, to promote cybersecurity and counter disinformation.
Monographic Objective
The main monographic objective within the proposed thematic lines is a comprehensive scientific study of the multifaceted relationship between information security and the development of the media in the context of the scaling of modern information wars, which includes both qualitative and quantitative methods of analyzing the presented issues. The research results will concern such critical issues as the changing nature of cyber threats, the role of digital platforms in the spread of disinformation, the consequences of artificial intelligence for cybersecurity, and the effectiveness of legislative and institutional mechanisms in countering hybrid threats. The monographic articles will be aimed at advancing interdisciplinary knowledge, in particular those of an informational nature, in the context of developing strategies to protect the integrity of information spaces in the era of ubiquitous digital influence and the evolution of security threats.
