Abstract
Official sources of the Spanish Defence have already started to transmit news through the Social Network Twitter. This new development comes later than it did in other countries,
which belong to the NATO and the rest of occidental countries. These official sites of Twitter have arrived after other already existing accounts from journalists that are specialized in
Defence and from other citizens. Nevertheless, even considering this delay in the adoption of Twitter as a way of transmitting information, official Spanish sources of Defence have made of this social network a channel to spread their “flashes”. The first outstanding case happened in
February and March 2013, when the account @Defensagob announced that Spanish troops had abandoned advanced positions in Afghanistan. This announcement served as a
notification to all journalists specialized in Defence, but also reached all citizens who follow the official account in Twitter. This represents, in fact, a risk for journalism, as in the future, a bridge could be established directly between the official sources and the public, leaving in danger the work of the Journalism
