The ‘Carandiru massacre’, 1992, could be considered a turning point in Brazilian contemporary history. This overcrowded Brazilian prison was decommissioned in 2002 but the mere allusion to the name “Carandiru” still refers to: the assassination of 111 inmates, to a ghetto of excluded, marginal people, a hell-world, a symbolic referent of the national prison system, a powerful metaphor of Brazil. The aim of this essay is to provide a detailed analysis of Hector Babenco’s fiction film Carandiru, released in 2003 and based on Drauzio Varella´s book “Carandiru Station”. Both film and book give an account of prisoners’ experience and memories in that mythical San Pablo prison. Carandiru popular prison drama deals with the daily tribulations of a group of inmates and the tragic fate that await them after a police squad invasion and killing charge.
